Federal Travel Booking Engine

April 2023 - May 2023

Our federal client was seeking to re-design their internal travel booking system. Our task was to create a demo that leverages IBM technology to showcase an optimized travel booking engine.

Persona and User Considerations

We began by identifying the primary user of the federal travel booking engine—a government employee planning a business trip. Next, we defined the user’s key needs and considerations to guide the design of an intuitive and efficient booking experience.

Identified key user considerations for booking business travel:

  • Proximity of lodging to the work site

  • Travel times that align with personal schedules

  • Preferred local transportation (rental car vs. rideshare)

  • Potential weather impacts

  • Comfort, safety, and cleanliness of accommodations.

Inital Mockups

We developed low-fidelity mockups to define user flows for booking travel, editing existing bookings, and creating expense reports. The initial iteration focused on leveraging the U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) and established design patterns to create efficient, task-specific workflows.

Final Designs

Based on client feedback, we refined our concepts and developed high-fidelity mockups, which we presented in a final demo.

The client highlighted several standout features, including:

  • the natural language search box

  • policy compliance indicators

  • integrated weather forecasts

  • gas price data

  • sustainability impact details
